Nursery Rhymes in Play

Did you know that Learning traditional nursery rhymes by heart supports children’s speech and language skills? I thought that I would share some of our activities with Nursery Rhymes in our Play.

One of our favourite resources is the Alphabet Rhyme Time Book. With a rhyme for every letter of the alphabet, and, a double page spread of activities and recommended books for each rhyme.

Some of the Rhymes in the book also now have a wooden character (or 5; Little Ducks!) to go alongside. Perfect for acting out the nursery rhyme whilst singing along.

Nursery Rhymes in Play - bedtime rhymes

We often choose a nursery rhyme at bedtime, discussing the characters in it and the story behind the rhyme.

I also stick the postcards in my bag and take them to the woods with us for an adventure. I hide the cards and wooden characters for the children to hide and seek out. Once they find a card we sit and sing that rhyme together.

We take them on holidays with us too, and the book has been to nursery for Finlay to share his favourite rhyme.

If you follow us on Instagram we have various reels to play of us singing along – Check out the Alphabet Rhyme Time Highlight on my insta feed!

Why not add the wooden characters to enhance play?

Whilst singing and story-telling, picture talk and play, small, big and even bigger play children will:

•    Develop phonological awareness
•    Recognise lowercase letter shapes of the alphabet
•    Make physical connections with the grapheme representation with related traditional nursery rhymes to support memory recall
•    Make connections with the alphabet letters and nursery rhyme songs

What do you think? Will you be trying the Alphabet Rhyme Time Book and Accessories?

I hope that you enjoyed reading about our nursery rhyme play and adventures together. Please do head over to our social channels and follow us for more videos and inspiration.
